This talk is a fund raiser in support of the Group Analytic Psychotherapy training taking place in Bengaluru, India. Starts with Swathi Prabhu, a candidate on the training programme, contextualizing the psychotherapy scene in India. Then the talk: this starts with a dream that captures some of the ways that philosophers have thought about ethics – deontology, consequentialism and virtue ethics. It is argued that society in general, including the field of psychotherapy, has become enamoured by the shallowest of these, consequentialism. Further, the world has become bewitched by the siren song of the logical positivists and their take on the fact/value dichotomy. When combined, both these have resulted in managerialist bureaucracies using quantity to police human quality. It is argued codes of ethics have more to do with the politics of professions rather than ethics itself; ultimately, they function as instruments of control. www.groupanalysisindia.com
