After weeks of ice and snow in North Idaho, Dan and Steve finally had enough. We loaded up the truck and headed west to Ancient Lakes in Washington for a winter camping escape that traded deep snow for sagebrush, basalt cliffs, and misty desert waterfalls. In true fashion, we overpacked to a nearly comical level, hauling far too much winter camping gear on a small cart into the lakes. The effort paid off. We found an idyllic campsite tucked among the sagebrush, set beneath a softly flowing waterfall, and settled in for a peaceful cold-weather camp in one of Washington’s most unique landscapes. This trip is about slowing down, embracing the absurdity of heavy gear, and enjoying the quiet beauty of winter camping in the desert.
