What is organisational development? Today I'm going to be talking to you about organisational development. What the hell is it? Hi, welcome to the Let's Talk Talent channel where we discuss the world of HR and talent management. We're here to help you unlock the potential in your people. There are multiple definitions of organisational development. And when I think about it, I really think about how are you enabling people to understand what they need to do to drive your business performance? But also, how do they do it in terms of the behaviours and how does that link ultimately to culture? So when you put the two together, you've got an organisation that is high performing, that understands exactly what it needs to deliver, and how it needs to deliver it. It goes back to the why: if you don't have that why, at the start, then it's really difficult to build any organisational development strategy. And when people think about it, they tend to put it into buckets, so they think L&D is part of it, performance management is part of it, careers is part of it, succession planning... And I would say yes, it is all of those things. But how are you motivating? How are you engaging? How are you enabling people to be the best that they can be? And for me, organisational development is based in two ways. Number one is how do you activate someone's performance? How do they understand the skills, the knowledge, the attributes that ultimately make them really successful in your organisation? And how are you providing opportunities for them to grow? How are you creating that expertise and that exposure for them? How are you then enabling their performance to be activated through great managers? And through understanding what the organisation's goals, purpose, mission ultimately is? And the second is how it links to potential. And this is where it intrinsically links to career mapping. How are you enabling people to understand the possibilities that exist, and then giving them the tools and techniques and opportunities to deliver that? Because if you just stick with the performance bucket, all you're enabling people to do is get better at their job. What you want is people to have the aspiration, the desire, the motivation, the drive, to take the business on, but also to have the capability to enable them to do that. Organisational development is the glue – it pulls everything together. So if you want to get, keep and grow brilliant people think about the glue. Use it well and you will have great stickability and you'll have a brand that people want to work for.
