Later, he had a reputation for being an exceptional harpsichord virtuoso, and in 1739, he became the organist to King Louis XV at the Chapelle Royale. A touch of irony: Keyboard pupils the world over have had to learn Daquin’s most famous piece: “Le Coucou”, which is in the third suite of his “Pièces de Clavecin” (and therefore not in the present recording, which only presents the first of his four suites). Yet despite the fame of that piece, Daquin himself, in the introduction to his volume, hardly mentions the “coucou” at all. Instead, he sings the praises of the piece he apparently valued above all the others. I quote from his preface: “The piece called ‘Les trois Cadences’ [Performer’s note: in the edition itself, the word is (mis-)spelled “Cadance”] is in a style which I can guarantee has never been found in music before, something quite new and out of the ordinary, and yet, in spite of its great technical difficulties, I have still managed to work in the most graceful melodic line.” Sorry, cuckoo! “Les trois Cadances” is the final piece of this first suite (at 23:38).
