I originally planned to do the Ha Giang Loop, but the weather had other plans, so I ended up in Hue instead. This isn't a history lecture, just a raw look at my attempt to see the "Big 4" sites in a single day while it was absolutely pouring. I started the morning with the best kind of fuel, a free bowl of Bun Bo Hue at my hotel, and then spent the rest of the day testing the limits of my Crocs on some of the most slippery ancient stones I've ever walked on. I’m pretty sure I pulled a muscle about few minutes into the Imperial City! Even with the rain, it was actually kind of amazing to have these massive gardens and temples almost entirely to myself. If you’re heading to Vietnam, don't skip Hue just because of a little (or a lot) of rain. NOTE: The last Emperor's children are still alive! While Princesses Phương Liên and Phương Dung live in France, two famous descendants are in California: Prince Bảo Ân (head of the Imperial House) in Westminster, and Princess Thi-Nga (great-great-granddaughter of Emperor Minh Mang), who owns a winery in Napa Valley. After France invaded in 1858 and fully colonized Vietnam by 1884, Emperor Bảo Đại eventually stepped down in 1945. Then, during the Vietnam War, the USA sent troops to support the South against the North. When the North finally won in 1975, the current government seized the rest of the family's private villas and lands. The royals went from owning an Imperial City to starting over as regular citizens in France and the USA. In this video: The "Big 4" Combo Ticket – Is it worth the 530k?
