Chloramine is a corrosive combination of chlorine and ammonia that is used in 22%+ of city water treatment plants. It is lethal to marine life, known to cause rashes and skin issues (http://www.chloramine.org/), produces its own set of toxic byproducts, and is much more difficult to remove than chlorine. For reference, a quality carbon in a backwashing filtration system will remove 99%+ of chlorine. On the other hand, you would need 3x more of that same quality carbon to remove 99%+ of chloramine. This is called contact time. You need more filtration material and specialized carbon to remove chloramine effectively for the entire life of the filter material. Removing chloramine is serious, tough business and cannot be accomplished by small filters, pitchers, bottles, etc. Chloramine will exhaust a simple filter extremely quickly, rendering it useless and in need of more frequent replacement. Environmental Water Systems has engineered one of the few specialty chloramine removal systems available, made specifically for the long contact time and more active carbon filtration needed to remove this chemical. What to look for in chloramine removal: 1. A large tank with a bare minimum of 85 lbs. of extremely high quality carbon. Chloramine is no joke - it takes proper contact time and a specialized, active carbon to remove this contaminant effectively at the flow rate needed to supply a home. 2. Backwashing systems are extremely important, and even more so when chloramine is present. Non-backwashing systems cannot remove contaminants effectively over a longer period of time, and are exhausted quickly without regenerating (backwashing) the media to keep it healthy and bacteria-free.
