The Kendal Aviation building in Waukesha, Wisconsin was built with Fox Blocks ICFs. Structural details, such as 42-foot high walls and a challenging 75-foot lintel span over the doors, added to the complexities. A lintel of this length is a major engineering hurdle because the beam must support the weight of the wall without sagging or failing, making it heavy, costly and difficult to install. The bar joists needed to be pitched to follow the roofline and cantilevered on all sides of the ICF walls to form a soffit and fascia. The solid concrete core of ICF allows for much greater layout flexibility compared to the rigid grid of a traditional steel building. At more than 25,000 square feet, the builders believe they saved three months of construction time compared to building with a steel package. Modern aircraft hangers are high-performance buildings, not just parking spaces. This building integrates high-tech hubs that are required by aviation operations. The success of this project has led to two other hangers being built in Waukesha.
