Claude Monet's 'The Petit Bras of the Seine at Argenteuil' has arrived in South Shields as part of The National Gallery's Masterpiece Tour – a rare chance to see a world‑class masterpiece right here in North East England. This painting has only left London once in the last 20 years, and now forms the heart of an exhibition exploring how art and nature can help us slow down, reconnect, and see the world differently. In this video, discover how Monet's revolutionary approach to painting outdoors, capturing a single moment of light, atmosphere and feeling, transformed not just art history, but the way we experience landscapes today. Often described as a kind of “magic mirror,” Monet's work invites us to look closer, feel deeper, and bring our own memories and emotions into the picture. The exhibition at South Shields Museum & Art Gallery is inspired by the restorative power of nature. Alongside the Monet, you’ll find artworks from the North East Museums collections and pieces co‑created with local young people, many of whom are exploring themes of calm, retreat and resilience through creative expression. The Masterpiece Tour is part of the National Gallery's commitment to bringing great art to communities across the UK, supporting wellbeing and creating space for people to reflect, connect, and see with new eyes.
