Through my own memories of marijuana and party culture in the early 2000s, in this reaction video, I listen along to Hyperborean Knowledge’s original video “How Millennials Were Brainwashed” and interject as someone born in 1986, I share my Millennial perspective growing up in rural Georgia and contrast it with the author (born in 1990) as we examine the Millennial experience together. I explore the claim that the Millennial generation was systematically influenced—“brainwashed”—by media programming, evolving youth culture, party norms, and shifting attitudes to substance use. We’ll react to this argument, unpack what “brainwashing” might mean, and examine how the rise of rap/hip-hop, school dances, peer-driven media, and the early internet may have shaped a generation’s approach to alcohol, cannabis, belonging, and excess. What we cover: The rise of rap/hip-hop in the 1990s and early 2000s and how many songs normalized drug use, partying and “street life”. How middle-school/high-school dances, peer gatherings and media playlists created a social soundtrack for Millennials regarding substance use. How popular male archetypes in film, music and media, widespread alcohol and drug use, and shows like That 70s Show may have contributed to permissive attitudes among parents and teens. My personal reflections: middle-school dances where rap songs referencing drug-selling were played, how peer culture shaped my attitude, and whether the term “brainwashing” fits or is too strong. A speculative angle: Could Millennial excess be linked to broader power structures? I discuss the theory that a push into hedonism might serve an agenda of creating a cashless society and totalitarian control by oligarchic forces.
