The Battle of Tippermuir, fought on 1 September 1644 near the modern village of Tibbermore, marked the first victory in Montrose's remarkable campaign for Charles I in Scotland. Despite lacking cavalry and artillery, Montrose's Royalist force—composed largely of Irish and Highland troops—routed the larger but less experienced Covenanter army under Lord Elcho. The Covenanters' attempt at skirmishing backfired, creating disorder that the Royalists swiftly exploited. This stunning victory not only secured vital supplies from the defeated army and the city of Perth—without which Montrose might have struggled to continue—but also exposed the Covenanters' vulnerability. With much of their army campaigning outside Scotland, Montrose’s success underscored the serious threat he posed.
