If the spots were separated by an interval greater than their diameters, a feeling of spaciousness would be created, making the background important. As they get closer together, tension increases, since the viewer sees them as separate but also as one. The closer they get, the more unified they appear, but also the more crowded. When they touch, they create a new shape, so the tension dissipates. This results in a static image or a sense of collision. In the Creation of Adam, the fingers of God and Adam nearly touch, creating maximal tension that would have dissipated had they actually touched. Two subjects can appear to belong together, like my son pulling my grandson on a sled. Alternatively, one subject can dominate over the other.
