This is a small session. The song is by Jesse Joy, and it's called "Nearly There". This may be my go-to setup for everything. So, I recreated the SSL 9000 J console with the BX Console SSL 9000 J channel strip across the whole session, then the townhouse bus compressor on the master bus. Then the summing is handled by Studio One's Brit Console, set to "Superb Analog" since the SSL 9000 J was a "superanalogue" desk. This is as close as you can get to the sound of the actual SSL 9000 J console in the box. It's a pretty sad song, and very emotional. I wanted to capture that emotion through a very clean mix, and with the vocals having a long hall reverb. I also used the Slate VMR to give a richer vocal sound through the mic modeling in the Blackbird mics and ran that into an 1176 Black face compressor with just 3db gain reduction to give the vocal some more tone, then followed up in the SSL 9000 J with some more light compression, and some EQ going into the compressor to control transients, and to keep everything smooth on the vocal. Then I finished it up with Fabfilter Pro DS, to control sibilance, and as a final touch I wrote automation on the big fader because the vocal needed to be quieter in the beginning, and then it needed to pick up when the drums kicked in. I hope you all liked this video. If you want to see more, please like and subscribe! Feel free to drop some tips or pointers about how this mix could be improved in the comments! Thanks for watching!
