For a safe future: An initiative by school children and stakeholders Children are among the greatest victims in any disaster situation, but they are also the most powerful protagonists for change. Children and young people represent 46 per cent of the Bihar’s population. Not only do they represent the largest group of people currently affected by disasters and climate change, but they are also more vulnerable than adults to its harmful effects. Children and young people also constitute the generation that will be required to deal with the future impacts of growing disaster risks and climate change. UNICEF Bihar Field Office initiated Comprehensive School Safety Programme (CSSP) in 2011 in 155 middle schools in 6 multi-disaster prone districts (East-Champaran, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Samastipur, Sitamarhi and Supaul). In 2013, in partnership with the Education department, the programme was scaled up to cover 3,323 schools, reaching over 1.7 million children and 28,067 teachers. In the year 2015; Government of Bihar launched a Chief Minister School Safety Programme to cover all the 80,000 plus schools. The CSSP is designed to equip children with the necessary knowledge and skills to increase their awareness of disaster risk and to participate in activities to reduce their exposure and vulnerabilities. The objective is to 'Make School a Safer Place for Every Child'.
