For refugees around the world, the options to earn an income are often severely limited. Without a work permit, they are often stuck in limbo, displaced and with little money to spare. Yet they have innate talents within them in the form of their language, their story and culture. Aline Sara is the co-founder and CEO of NaTakallam, an award-winning social enterprise that hires forcibly displaced persons and their host community members as online tutors, teachers, and translators. Since its beginnings in 2015, NaTakallam has enabled displaced people to self-generate more than US $1.700.000 in total income, and has since expanded in both geographic locations and languages offered. At Falling Walls, Sara, who is a Cartier Women’s Initiative, a Summit & Halcyon fellow and former laureate of ‘Woman Entrepreneur of the Year’ at the Elle Impact Awards, will explore the value of giving refugees access to digital livelihoods, which creates a new and dynamic learning environment, imbued with the rich cultural heritages of the teachers as well as their life stories.
