This video helps MBA students in my global management course choose the right company for their global expansion project. If you're not one of my students but you're exploring international business projects yourself, you may find this helpful—and you’re welcome to subscribe and explore my other videos for deeper guidance on global strategy: @drmaharvey #GlobalManagement #InternationalBusiness #GlobalExpansion #MBA #BusinessStrategy In this video, I discuss how to select a company for their global expansion project, including how to judge complexity, risk levels, entry modes, and the practicality of writing a detailed business plan over an eight-week course. We look at the differences between export, franchising, contract manufacturing, joint ventures, and direct investment, along with the varying workload these options require. I also explain why choosing a company you actually like is critical for managing motivation through a demanding project, and why certain types of businesses—like restaurants, grocery stores, and big-box retailers—carry significantly more moving parts than students expect. To help spark ideas, I offer several real examples from past students, ranging from exporting local products to shifting manufacturing overseas to creatively expanding niche or personal ventures. I also cover strategies for finding inspiration: using your workplace (if the company is not already global), thinking about your future career interests, exploring local companies you care about, or even expanding a product or creative project you’re personally invested in. The goal is to help you balance passion, feasibility, and the realism needed to build a strong international business plan. We end by previewing the next step: selecting a country for expansion based on cost, benefit, and risk. If you have questions or want feedback on your idea, reach out—I’m happy to help you shape a strong proposal. 00:00 Intro 01:13 Entry strategies: risk vs. return 01:55 Ease of entry and operations 05:35 Inspiration for business choice 06:10 Your place of employment 07:41 Your future career 08:01 A local business or one that interests you 08:25 A product you enjoy 09:42 Additional decision factors 09:49 Is your business domestic? 10:35 You don't have to move the entire operation 11:03 Examples of business plans 13:50 Conclusion
