Embarking on our first adventure of 2025, we set our sights on the enchanting Bomburu Ella Waterfall, also known as Perawella Falls. Nestled near the border of Sri Lanka's Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts, this magnificent cascade is celebrated as the widest waterfall in the country. Journey to Bomburu Ella Our expedition began in Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as 'Little England' due to its colonial charm and cool climate. From there, we traveled approximately 14 kilometers to reach the starting point of our hike. Opting for a tuk-tuk ride, we enjoyed the scenic drive through lush tea plantations and verdant landscapes. Alternatively, visitors can rent scooters or hire private cars for this journey. The Hike Upon arriving at the trailhead, we embarked on a 2-kilometer trek to the waterfall. The path, well-marked and moderately challenging, meandered through dense forests and occasional clearings. Along the way, we encountered a few steep sections and rocky steps, but the presence of small stalls offering refreshments provided timely respites. As we progressed, the distant roar of cascading water grew louder, building our anticipation. Tips for Future Travelers Best Time to Visit: The falls are particularly impressive during the rainy season from October to January when water flow is at its peak. However, for more comfortable trekking conditions, consider visiting between February and May. Entrance Fee: A nominal fee of 100 LKR per person is charged, with an additional 100 LKR for parking. Facilities: While camping is prohibited, picnics are welcome. Remember to carry essentials like water, snacks, and sturdy footwear. Our journey to Bomburu Ella was a harmonious blend of adventure, natural beauty, and serene moments. It set a promising tone for the year ahead, leaving us eager for more explorations in 2025.
