BURLINGTON, Vermont -- Someone left threatening notes for Vermont Department For Children and Families workers. Any loss of life is tragic, a 2-year-old is especially tragic, Sgt. John Sly of the Rutland Police Department said. Sly says the loss of any life is devastating, but the death of 2-year-old Dezirae Sheldon has shocked the community. The toddler's stepfather, Dennis Duby, was arrested for allegedly crushing Dezirae's skull and killing her. On Monday, angry citizens rallied outside the Department For Children and Families in Rutland claiming DCF failed the little girl. But on Wednesday, police say the threats got personal. The first note that was reported to us again was very generic toward the DCF and their case workers -- basically accusing them of being responsible for the death of the 2-year-old and that they shall be held accountable for that death, Sly explained. Police say the threats were left on the cars of two DCF workers -- one at a Rutland parking garage -- and the other at a DCF worker's home. Sly says the notes were very aggressive and intimidating -- enough so, that the workers had concerns for their own safety. And police say they've beefed up security around the victims' homes and workplace. It's also important to know that this is also a criminal law violation -- this is not just simply a note telling someone that they are disliked -- these notes are threatening harm, which is a violation of our state statute, Sly said. The DCF will conduct its own investigation into the toddler's death. An independent board will be charged with reviewing it.
