Welcome to Budapest, Hungary 🇭🇺 previously filmed September 2019* Budapest is the capital of Hungary and is divided into 2 areas by the Danube River. Buda is hilly while Pest is flat and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge connects them together! 🌉 While you can ride across it, I definitely recommend walking the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. You can really take in how enormous it is, but you also get excellent views of Parliament, Castle Hill, and the Danube River! The Hungarian Parliament building is an architectural sight to behold! It is Neo-Gothic style and is a little over 100 years old.🌅 Tours inside the Hungarian Parliament Building are available when the National Assembly is not in session for 6400 HUF (approx. $21 USD). These tours fill up so be sure to book ahead of time! Best views of the Budapest Parliament Building: From the Danube on a river cruise Across the river (Buda side) at Batthyány Square Fisherman’s Bastion - The top of Gellért-hill 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐛𝐞 🥀 Between the years of 1944 and 1945, the Arrow Cross militiamen terrorized and publicly murdered thousands of Jewish people in Budapest. Prior to their execution thousands of Jewish people were forced to remove their shoes on the banks of the Danube River. During this time of war, shoes were considered a valuable commodity that could be traded on the black market or worn by the militia. After removing their shoes, the Jewish people would be brutally executed and thrown into the Danube River. Men, women, and children were murdered on the banks of the Danube River. 👞 The Shoes on the Danube memorial consists of 60 pairs of rusted shoes cast from iron. They memorialize the unspeakable horrors that took place on the banks of the Danube River. 🥀 IMPORTANT NOTE When visiting Shoes on the Danube (or any memorial) please be respectful. I saw far too many tourists taking selfies and smiling pictures next to the shoes and it was infuriating. Memorial etiquette: Avoid talking loudly, having unnecessary chatter, and laughing - Ensure photography is allowed and only take respectful photos Be sure to slow down and truly connect with the atrocities you are learning about. 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐥⁣ ⛪️⁣ Matthias Church is not only an architectural beauty, but it has a very interesting past. It was initially used as a coronation church by Hungarian Kings, but it also served as a mosque for over 150 years, and is now a Catholic Church.⁣ 🌤⁣ Matthias Church is not only a church but also a museum and also hosts concerts throughout the year. There is an entrance fee to visit the church which includes entry to the museum. However, if you want to have a moment of silence or pray, it is free to enter.⁣ 🚌⁣ Getting there: ⁣ You can ride the funicular from Clark Adam Square to Castle Hill. Castle Hill is a 10-15 min walk from the Funicular.⁣ Or the 16A bus from Szell Kalman Square or 16 Bus from Deak Square (M1, M2, M3 metro lines). My last day in Budapest was spent wandering around the city trying to squeeze more sightseeing. I visited some notable attractions like Fisherman’s Bastion, the Little Princess statue, and the Michael Jackson Memorial Tree! I had all day to wander because I was taking an OVERNIGHT train to Prague! 🚅 When visiting Europe, train travel is a MUST!! It is so much easier to show up about 45 mins prior to departure, find your coach, board, and relax! 🚞 I opted to book a sleeper car for €43 (approx. $48USD) on Ceske Drahy using the tips from ‘The Man in Seat 61’ website and it was seamless.
