I was so lucky to meet John Reischman at the 1994 Strawberry Music Festival at Camp Mather (near Yosemite) and videoed a private lesson. Many consider his 1924 Gibson Lloyd Loar F5 to be the best sounding mandolin ever and his touch brings out the best tone ever. It was so cool that he compared it to my 1980 Hutto F45 which was newly refinished, refretted and strung with silk and steel strings by John Hutto. This instrument was built for Everett Lilly, a pioneer of Bluegrass music. "The Lilly" was inscribed on the headstock and the finish was worn when I got it. I met Everett at Rockgrass years later. He was in his late 80s and his eyes lit up when I showed him my F45. He took it on stage and played his set with it. Then explained how special this mandolin is. I felt very dumb by having a piece of bluegrass history refinished. "The Hutto" replaced "The Lilly" on the headstock. I feel honored to play such a fine instrument and meet many of my mandolin heros. Paul Shelasky wrote the great tune Cazadero that John is playing here.
