The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has an innovative way to help kidney disease patients who need to lose weight for a transplant. Using diet, exercise, counseling and GLP-1 medication, patients can safely lose the weight needed to be placed on the transplant waitlist. The program started in 2024, and researchers followed six patients who needed to lose weight. They were given semaglutide or tirzepatide based on their insurance. All patients tolerated the medication well, and no adjustments were needed for kidney function. Some patients have already had successful transplants, while others are still losing weight. The average time to reach the desired weight for transplant was 125 days.
