Hitman Arrested in Marius van der Merwe Hit| Madlanga Commission Witness Case

South African police have arrested an alleged Inkabi (hitman) linked to the assassination of Marius van der Merwe, the protected witness who testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Van der Merwe, who was known publicly only as Witness D, was shot and killed outside his home in Brakpan on 5 December 2025, in front of his wife and children. His identity had been protected due to the sensitive and explosive allegations he made during the commission. During his testimony, van der Merwe implicated himself, security company bosses and members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department in the alleged torture and killing of robbery suspect Emmanuel Mbense in April 2022. He told the commission that Mbense was tortured and waterboarded during an arrest in Brakpan before he died. Van der Merwe alleged that suspended metro police deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi later helped clean the scene and ordered the body to be dumped at a dam in Nigel. Former police reservist Wiandre Pretorius was also implicated in the case and became a key suspect after Witness D’s murder. Pretorius later survived an alleged assassination attempt before dying in a separate tragic incident in February 2026. Police say the investigation has been ongoing since the case was first reported and is being handled by Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) due to the involvement of police officers. The alleged hitman was arrested in Johannesburg on 14 March 2026 and is expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court. Authorities say multiple people connected to the case have died in suspicious or tragic circumstances, raising questions about whether suspects may be eliminating each other.
