During this setting, I raised an adjournment motion about the Ang Mo Kio SERS announcement. A total of 606 households under my care were affected by the announcement. Each of these units tell different stories – a single mother who worked hard to move out of a rental unit into a resale flat after her divorce; an elderly uncle who hopes to continue to live in a same sized flat so that his grandchildren can continue to come over and stay; a resident who recently used her life savings to renovate because they had no choice due to spalling concrete of their old flat. There are more. Two elderly sisters bought flats adjacent to each other in the hopes of being able to look after each other in their old age. The older sister told me that her salary earned her barely enough to get by and she had just paid off her loan. Now she doesn’t know what to do. The voices and stories of each one of our residents must be heard. Parliament was one of several channels I had used to raise this issue further. I have also worked with Government agencies, and spoken with several different layers of both HDB, as well as my residents. During this speech, I also spoke in Mandarin, English, and Malay. We will continue to speak up for our residents where we can, and use both formal and informal channels to communicate the needs of our residents to the best of our abilities.
