In many Yoruba traditional communities, royal councils usually appoint regents who are only meant to be on their respective thrones for a short while until a substantive King is enthroned. Interestingly though, majority of these regents especially the females are stop-gaps and not permanent heads of their communities. Ekiti and Ondo States in South-western Nigeria have some of the highest headcount of female monarchs in the country, some as young as 15. As the world celebrates women in this month of March, Gist Nigeria takes a look how traditional practices have taken a toll on female regents, the many biases they face and what happens to them when they leave office.
