CHANNEL PIX [email protected] In his first unpublished work after the success of The Elite of Delay, from 2017, Jessé Souza dedicates himself to understanding the Brazilian middle class. With the same clear and accessible style, but without making concessions to superficiality, he now presents an original and innovative vision of this fundamental class of society. #jessesouza #sociology #middleclass In The Middle Class in the Mirror, he deconstructs the biggest myths that seek to perpetuate the middle class's lack of knowledge about itself. The first is that its definition is determined exclusively by income. Jessé goes beyond social theories that are based solely on the sphere of money and power towards a deeper analysis of the ideas and moral values of this segment of the population. The second myth is the cultural conception of the Brazilian "mongrel", inferior, emotional and corrupt by nature – lies that the elite and its intellectuals invented to better indoctrinate and manipulate the middle class. Jessé reconstructs the history of this class in the world and in Brazil, and reflects on the position it assumes in its relationship with the elite and the working classes in the country. In this way, he shows how it is possible to understand the sources of its practical behavior and the origins of its principles. The book has an immense and rich material, the result of hundreds of interviews conducted with people from the most varied fractions of the middle class between 2015 and 2018, in several Brazilian cities. The objective is to create a mirror in which the most characteristic worldviews of this social class can be seen in a new and challenging way. No prior knowledge is required of the reader, only the courage to look at oneself without prejudice – the true prerequisite for any real learning.
