Phoksumdo || Shey Phoksundo, the deepest lake of Nepal ||

Phoksumdo lake is the deepest lake of Nepal. Its depth is 136.20m and it lies at an altitude of 3,611.5m from sea level. “Shey Phoksundo” was named by National park but the actual name is “Phoksumdo” which means, Phok means caves as there are caves capacity of 2-300 people. Sum means 3 in Tibetan language and there are 3 rivers flowing around the lake. Do means dobato or midway as the lake is the midway between upper and lower dolpa. It is believed that there was a civilization before the lake was formed. According to locals, many years ago before the lake was formed a spirit or ghost appeared and asked one individual if he wanted “oil or water” and the individual choose “water”. Then water starts to flow from underneath and hence the lake was formed.
