Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin have kicked off their hot spring summit today... seeking progress on the row over windswept isles in the western Pacific controlled by Russia but also claimed by Japan. Aides of the two heads of state say the two countries will likely revive security talks that were suspended back in 2014. Lee Unshin has more. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is meeting his Russian counterpart for a 2-day bilateral summit. On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Japan to meet Prime Minister Abe at a hot spring resort in Yamaguchi Prefecture to discuss a range of issues. Topping the agenda will be the longstanding territorial dispute over a group of islands located in the western Pacific...known as the 'Northern Territories' in Japan and as the 'Southern Kurils' in Russia. The islands were seized by Soviet forces at the end of World War Two, forcing some 17-thousand Japanese residents to flee. Tokyo has been hoping for progress regarding the issue...as Abe told reporters that he would resolve the 70-year-old dispute in hopes of improving ties with Moscow. But in the run-up interview to his official visit...Putin stated that Russia has no territorial problems whatsoever with Japan, and it is only Japan that believes there still are regional issues with Russia. The two leaders are also expected to discuss economic cooperation plans in areas ranging from technology and infrastructure to energy. The two-day summit will continue in Tokyo on Friday.
