Music Stuff With Spock #14 - My Musical Bag of Tricks (Part Two). As one studies music, a composer picks up a number of tricks; special effects that can be done on certain instruments or groups of instruments. Over time, these become organized in different methods according to your needs as a musician. All these effects can be collected in an imaginary bag (which is a concept borrowed from a memory technique). This set of three videos looks at some of the orchestration tricks that I have picked up over the years. This second episode looks mostly at effects for strings: tremolos, col legno, scratch tones and various noise sounds. I explain a concept, perform the effect and show how it is written. We also look at tremolos on orchestra bells (including the mouth tremolo). The examples are performed by me using a chamber ensemble of: orchestra bells and strings (violins, violas, and cellos). Recorded in GarageBand, video made in iMovie - July 4, 2018
