Resting in Zion Union Cemetery is Thomas Cuff of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania — a soldier of the famed 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Enlisting on April 22, 1863, Cuff served in Company I and fought in the regiment’s major engagements, including the assault on Fort Wagner in Charleston Harbor and the Battle of Olustee in Florida. He survived the war and later settled in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a laborer until his death in 1882. In this episode, we explore the life and service of a man whose courage reflects the determination of the United States Colored Troops and their fight for freedom and citizenship.
