Ceyx, the king of Trachis, and Alcyone, his devoted wife, were deeply in love. However, Ceyx decided to journey across the sea to consult an oracle, despite Alcyone’s warnings about the dangers of the voyage. As Ceyx sailed, a violent storm arose, and his ship was tragically wrecked, drowning him in the turbulent waves. Back home, Alcyone prayed to the gods for her husband's safe return, unaware of his fate. The god Morpheus, taking pity on her, appeared in her dreams in the form of Ceyx to reveal the truth of his death. Devastated by grief, Alcyone ran to the shore where she found her husband's lifeless body washed up on the beach. Overcome by sorrow, she threw herself into the sea, intending to join him in death. Moved by their love and despair, the gods transformed both Ceyx and Alcyone into halcyon birds (kingfishers). It is said that during the "halcyon days"—a period of calm weather in winter—the sea remains tranquil so that the birds can nest peacefully. The myth symbolizes eternal love, loss, and the divine intervention of the gods to honor their unbreakable bond.
