After crossing paths while members of 80's pop band The Sparklers, Melanie Oxley and Chris Abrahams formed a partnership that would produce several acclaimed albums and one iconic EP 'Resisting Calm' from which this classic piece of Aussie indie pop was generated. With pop/rock/jazz and blues influences, this musical collaboration went on to earn the pair an Australian Recording Industry Association Nomination in 1993 and a legion of fans with their long players 'Welcome To Violet', 'Coal. 'Jerusalem Bay' and 'Blood Oranges'. I was introduced to the wondrous voice of Melanie Oxley in 1991 and i was smitten instantly. Hers is one of such beauty and texture and more than 20 years later, her vocals provide much in the way of solace and joy. Chris Abrahams' songwriting and producing as well as his exemplary piano work have made him one of the most respected musicians in the country. 'Benchtop' was the song that received the most airplay from the 4 track EP 'Resisting Calm'. It is at once, moody, soulful, sobering and wise. It is a perfect marriage of the talents of the two artists who are credited on this memorable recording. For many it remains the signature tune for the pair, but for me that is tough as I am such a big fan of their entire catalogue, especially the most recent and it seems final album that the partnership has created - 'Blood Oranges' - a masterpiece of pop//rock/jazz/soul treasures. I am forever grateful to the fan with consummate taste in music for bringing Melanie Oxley and Chris Abrahams to my attention. Thanks Bronwyn!
