In 1927, deep in the frozen wilderness of the Ural Mountains, a group of Soviet gulag prisoners were forced to dig a new mine shaft through the permafrost. After weeks of brutal labor, their pickaxes broke through into something that should not exist—a vast underground cavern, impossibly warm, reeking of sulfur and ancient decay. What they discovered in the darkness below would haunt the few survivors for the rest of their lives. Men began vanishing from their bunks without a trace, no footprints in the snow, no screams in the night, just empty beds and the faint smell of deep earth. The Soviet authorities sealed the mine with concrete and dynamite, scattered the remaining prisoners across Siberia, and buried all records of what happened. But the stories survived, whispered from one generation to the next—warnings about the pale thing that dwells beneath the mountains, the ancient creature that was sleeping long before humanity existed, and what happens when you dig too deep and disturb something that was never meant to be found.
