How Israel’s West Bank ‘forbidden entry’ signs enforce system of control

A sign warning Israeli citizens not to enter certain Palestinian areas is posted at entrances across the occupied West Bank. While framed as a safety measure, it also reinforces a system in which Palestinian communities are cut off from one another and kept under Israeli military control. The West Bank is divided into three zones, Areas A, B and C. Area A contains major Palestinian population centres but is made up of disconnected enclaves. Area B is under Palestinian civil administration with Israeli security authority. Area C, which covers the majority of the territory, is under full Israeli control, where settlement expansion, building restrictions and settler violence make Palestinian life increasingly difficult.
