The TRS-80 Color Computer and Dragon computers, among others in the 1980s, came with a PAINT command as part of their BASIC language. All PAINT needed was a starting point, a paint color, and a border color, and it would figure out how to fill in any shape you had drawn on the screen. In this video we go through PAINT's algorithm step-by-step, illustrating how it combined a stack and a simple paint-line routine to color in anything you threw at it. We also compare it to a much simpler depth-first-search approach. Coming soon: An even deeper dive into the PAINT implementation!
