Professor Alvin Roth, Stanford University, in conversation with Professor Nava Ashraf, Marshall Institute (LSE), about how markets work and how we can use them for the benefit of society. Using the example of kidney exchange, Professor Roth explains how he and his colleagues redesigned the market for kidney transplants to ensure that more people would benefit from a transplant. They did this by building systems for kidney exchange where they match donors with non-related recipients by collating information on what kidneys are available and who can take them. In the second half of the video, they discuss the co-generation of model of research and market design used at the Marshall Institute. Professor Roth explains how his market designs have been championed by someone who already works in the market and why this has been key to the success of the redesigns.
