Frozen Pool Pipes and Equipment | What To Do When Your Swimming Pool Freezes

Frozen Pool Pipes and Equipment | What To Do When Your Swimming Pool Freezes First is to keep your pool running 24/7, if you can. This means turn the pump motor on and don't turn it off until it warms up. Moving water has a harder time freezing compared to stagnant water. Next is to not attempt to break up the ice off the top of the pool. You could damage the pool surface, the tile, or coping. It's best to just allow this to thaw out naturally. As long as the bottom drain is operational, water will be pulled through that, even if the skimmer is not functioning. If you electricity goes out for a short period, it might not be an issue. With extended power outages like what happened in Texas, care must be taken in order to make sure your equipment isn't damaged. If you become aware of a deep extended freeze coming, you can always drain your pump pot, filter, and heater. If water is left in the filter and other areas, the frozen water will expand and you run the risk of the filter and pipes cracking. If this happens, it's best to purchase a new filter as the filter may have been compromised. There are cracks that you see, and cracks you don't see. Don't try to repair it or use an epoxy. Filters are under tremendous pressure and you don't want to run the risk of the filter exploding. If you don't normally close your pool for the winter and know a deep freeze is coming, draining your filter, pump pot and heater is an easy insurance policy against costly damage later on. Once the temperatures start to go up, you'll want to inspect all your valves, including your check valves. Take the valves apart to make sure there's no ice hiding in them. If the motor is turned back on and there's ice still in the valves and lines, this can restrict water flow and may cause damage to your pump motor. Pump motors are designed to pull water, not air. Any visible signs of cracks in the plumbing lines or valves indicate those components will need to be replaced. This goes for any in-line components you might have such as chlorine generators and chlorine tab feeders. Any rubber tubing should be replaced. Cracks can still occur inside the lines, so take extra precautions when you turn your pump motor back on and watch for any signs of leaks and have them repaired. Once the temperatures start to warm back up and you made the necessary repairs, you'll still want to monitor your system for at least a few weeks, as hidden cracks or compromised systems will start to show themselves. You'll also want to look over your deck to make sure your drains aren't damaged or cracked, and make any repairs if you need to.
