The immune response is the body’s coordinated defence system that detects harmful microbes, contains them, and restores damaged tissue. It begins with innate immunity, where physical barriers like skin, along with fast‑acting cells such as neutrophils, macrophages, and natural killer cells, provide immediate, non‑specific protection through inflammation, phagocytosis, and antimicrobial chemicals. As the response continues, adaptive immunity becomes activated: B cells produce highly specific antibodies, while T cells either coordinate the reaction or destroy infected cells directly. Once the threat is cleared, regulatory mechanisms switch off inflammation, and repair processes rebuild tissue while memory cells remain to ensure faster, stronger protection against future encounters with the same pathogen.
