Various exteriors of Cortina town centre decorated with Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games signage amid heavy snow 2. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Gianluca Lorenzi, Mayor of Cortina: "The most important legacy is certainly the infrastructure part, because in reality it is the one that is, let's say, felt the most by those who arrive in Cortina and also by our residents, so better roads, better facilities, the new ski lift, this is something that is enjoyed directly by citizens but also by those who come to Cortina." 3. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Gianluca Lorenzi, Mayor of Cortina: "A development machine was triggered both from the point of view of redeveloping the Cortina offer from a point of view to becoming a reference point for winter sports, because we already had the World Cup, and today the scenario opens up even wider with the three disciplines of Bobsleigh, skeleton and luge. We have a foundation called Fondazione Cortina that follows all this tourist development. So in fact, we have only calibrated the machine to perform for what is the next tourism, both sports and let's say recreational tourism, in Cortina." SOUNDBITE (English) Dino Ruta, Professor of Sports & Events Business at Bocconi University: “Now we will have the Olympic villages that hopefully will be transformed into successful dorms for students from a social perspective. But I strongly believe that the huge impact will be the Arena Santa Giulia because we in Rogoredo is Milano, very close to the metro. There will be an incredible opportunity for the city to welcome international events. They will not have a tenant. So it means that they will be everyday able to organise different events.” SNTV Milan, Italy - 11 January 2026 9. Various exteriors of Santa Giulia Arena in Milan 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Dino Ruta, Professor of Sports & Events Business at Bocconi University: “The games are very much inspirational. The five rings, the six colours of the Olympic flag, that's something that people will remember forever. And many Italians now are proud to have delivered, fingers crossed so far, a good, a great, a unique edition of the games.” ASSOCIATED PRESS Cortina, Italy - 19 February 2026 12. Mid of Olympic rings outside venue STORYLINE: Beyond the spectacle of competition, attention is turning to the legacy of the Milan Cortina Games. Unlike previous games centred on a single host city, these are the most geographically dispersed Winter Games in Olympic history, with venues split between Milan and mountain clusters including Cortina, Livigno and Predazzo. The model was designed by organisers and endorsed by the International Olympic Committee to maximise the use of existing facilities, while targeting infrastructure investment where it was deemed most necessary, with a strong emphasis on post Games functionality. In Milan, the Games' legacy centres on urban redevelopment.
