Event Opener 4:33 Client: FITC Director: MK12 Animation: MK12 http://www.mk12.com Ben Radatz, co-founder/collaborator at MK12 in Kansas City: "We were commissioned by FITC to assist with the branding of their 10-year-anniversary festival in Toronto. In addition to poster / brochure / misc. design, we also produced a 5-minute short film to open the festival - sort of a design centerpiece from which all our other festival work spawned. "FITC has a tradition of promoting artists as the visual foundation for their events, so they gave us very few restrictions (and a lot of trust) in our interpretation of their message. We'd check in with them to share our ideas and make sure we weren't spending too much of their money, and they'd always encourage us to carry on. "The piece really relies on the credibility of its overall look; it doesn't pay off well if the viewer doesn't feel like they're watching a vintage intermission reel, at least at the beginning. Those old reels were a wild mash-up of tones, textures and themes. From a narrative standpoint, our biggest challenge was figuring out how to tell a story across all of those universes. "Much of the film was hand-animated, which was a new experience for us. We'd done stop-frame animation before, but never emulating a particular style or era, or needing choreography. We teamed up with TJ Fuller, a fantastic cel animator, and together we mapped out the main action sequences and worked his illustrations into our pipeline. It took some time to get the kinks worked out, but we got the hang of it." Schedule: "The idea was floated by us a year ago, and we kept it on the back burner while we finished up other projects. We came up with a directon early on and built onto it over the next few months, with a bulk of the branding work done over the fall, and the short film right after that."
