Possessive Pronouns and Possessive Adjective Cases of Personal Pronouns | English Grammar

In English grammar, possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns are used to show ownership or relationship. A possessive adjective comes before a noun and describes who owns that noun. These are: my, your, his, her, its, our, and their. For example, in the sentence, “This is my book,” the word my is a possessive adjective because it tells us that the book belongs to the speaker. Similarly, “Their house is beautiful” shows that the house belongs to them. Possessive adjectives always come before nouns and cannot stand alone. On the other hand, possessive pronouns replace the noun completely and do not come before a noun. These are: mine, yours, his, hers, its (rarely used), ours, and theirs. For example, in the sentence, “This book is mine,” the word mine replaces “my book.” Likewise, “That house is theirs” means “their house.” The main difference is that possessive adjectives are followed by nouns, while possessive pronouns stand alone and replace nouns.
