Carlton in Coverdale celebrates Foresters Day every other year. The Foresters Friendly Society was originally formed in 1816 as the Banks of the Cover Branch of the Ancient Order of Foresters. Although the branch broke away from the main society, the local order retains the name. Members of the Foresters (all men) still wear the traditional green coats, peaked hats and black belts in the procession. The remainder wear green sashes, and all carry staves. The rest of the village joins in with the walk when it goes up to Melmerby and back. In the past, the procession apparently travelled all around the Dale, stopping off at The Foresters and The Moorcock in Carlton, the Topham Arms in Melmerby, and the Old Inn at West Scrafton. The Foresters is temporarily closed (it is being bought by the local community!), while the other pubs are long gone . . . which is why cans of beer have to be carried around for the sake of tradition.
