2x1x2 Flutter Kick Snorkel & Fins Key Items Let's explore the next drill in our butterfly series, 2x1x2 with a flutter kick. In this variation of the drill, we will be using snorkel & fins. We would encourage you to take a look at the variations of this drill that use other pieces of equipment, as these offer a progressive model to the key items we look for in this stroke. Remember, butterfly is an up and forward stroke; our goal is to stay low and forward. This drill is very simple, which we like, and it build on another series of drills we have been working, the single arm variations of the drill. A later progression of this drill uses the butterfly kick. We like this variation with the snorkel, because it allows for the head to stay still and we are not introducing the breath. Remember, sometimes it is easier to take things in pieces as there is also a lot happening at once. Let's go over what we look for. We will be performing a single arm movement (twice), then a sinlge double arm, then a single arm movement (twice). The non stroking arms for the single arm will stay in front of the body, We would look for the hand to pull the water back, establishing a great power triangle. The path the hand will take as it continues to push water back to the hip can vary on the level of the athlete. With developmental swimmers, we like to see the hand just push back to the hip area and upper level age group swimmers and senior swimmers will see the hand come inwards under or towards the belly button and then push out. The breath would occur as the hand passes the shoulder, keeping the head nice and low to the surface of the water. We will cover this in the next variation of the drill. The swimmer will have an entry point in front of their of their shoulders or just outside of the shoulder area. This can be dependent on the ability level of the swimmer. We like to emphasize the flutter kick being moderate, nothing too crazy. Just a steady dosage to go forward. Key Points: Perform 2 Single Arms, A Double, Then 2 Single Arms & Repeat Add Snorkel & Fins Hands Land In Front Or Just Outside Of The Shoulders Active Kick -While We Do Not Want The Knees To Excessively Bend, Do Allow Them To Bend Head/chest and feet move in opposite directions from the hips. Engage the core. Focus on moving forward. To view the drill only, check out this video. • 2x1x2 Flutter Kick Snorkel & Fins Follow me on Instagram @coachmikeswim
