The film Schmoedipus was made for the BBC 'Play For Today' series in 1974. Tim Curry sings and plays M.O.T.H.E.R. on the piano to his 'mother'. From the very first line his performance is exceptional, that voice! There was an American re-make of Schmoedipus filmed in 1988, this time with actor Gary Oldman playing Tim Curry's role. He sings the same song and I uploaded both versions so you could compare by yourself. I must say that I've spent the last 10 years admiring Gary Oldman's version believing it the only one filmed. Only this month I discovered Tim Curry's rendition and I have to say that I now prefer Tim Curry. What a performance! So subtle and dark and sweet, all at the same time; voice and acting. A disturbing yet fascinating role. About Schmoedipus: it is a dark story, between 'mother' and 'son'. Tim plays an androgynous but sexually threatening man-boy. He is a threatening outsider, who comes to the home of a middle aged couple, and is drawn to the wife. That's one way to understand it. Another is that the woman is imagining him, and that he is the son she smothered a few days after his birth, many years ago. It is understood that only ONE copy exists in the New York Film Museum. It's never been on TV since 1974 and probably will never be. If you are lucky enough to live in NY you can go to the museum and book a screening! Just in case someone is interested in the sheet music in order to play this old tune on the piano, here you can find scans of the music and lyrics: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/ihas/loc...
