The World in Shanghai - Anting New Town (German Theme) | Life in Shanghai 15th February 2021

This is the 4th episode of my mini series. In this episode I take you to Anting New Town, which has a German theme. It was designed in 2001 and completed in 2008, with an area over 1 sq. kilometre. It is supposed to house 50,000 residents. While I don't think all property is full, it's definitely no longer a ghost town. The houses are built in a Bauhaus style and were designed by Albert Speer, who's father was Adolf Hitler's chief architect. In 2001 the government started the initiative called One City 9 Towns. The idea was to encourage people to move into the suburbs. In the end only 7 towns were built and it's taking a while to sell all the property in these replicas. There is a lot of life now in Shanghai suburbs now nevertheless, due to metro expansion, and general city growth.
