Our trip kicked off at Mount Stronach, 500 metres and very cold because of it. Sub zero temperatures are regular days up here and local knowledge is everything. Back in the days when I had hair, I got to mix it with a couple of young local Tassie boys who lived for finding the roughest tracks around. They knew the bush and loved every bit of it. Perfect guides with that great spirit of adventure combined with a whole lot of bush experience. Meet Trout and Luke, a couple of lads with a whole lot of experience. A bright red Nissan GQ up against a dirty old green Toyota. The Patrol's big tyres and jacked up clearance makes a whole lot of sense but Milo's got those magic locker buttons in her favour too. So it's the treachery of old age versus the exuberance of youth. Which all sounds good until you front up to a big mud puddle and wind up sitting on the axles. Oh dear. There's a whole lot of winching tips and mud driving experience thrown in here too! So why do they call him Trout? Because that's what he does, finds trout. Every time we stopped Trout had a rod out testing any puddles or creeks in the vicinity. But then Tassie's the perfect place for living off the land. Wild, beautiful, always an adventure. And didn't we have on this time around!
