In chemistry, the inductive effect in a molecule is a local change in the electron density due to electron-withdrawing or electron-donating groups elsewhere in the molecule, resulting in a permanent dipole in a bond. It is present in a σ bond, unlike the electromeric effect which is present in a π bond. By Using the inductive effect, one can easily predict the acidity and basicity of the organic compounds. As a generalisation, it may be said that the electron-withdrawing groups (EWG) increase the acidity of a compound and electron-donating group decrease the acidity of a compound.
