While visiting the Specialized Headquarters in Morgan Hill, California, I met with Sean Estes to review the Turbo Levo Comp Fat model. We got to talking and Sean opened up about ebikes in general, providing some perspective on electric mountain bikes and why to him, they aren’t the same as mopeds or motorcycles. His major points centered on the relatively low 250 watt power output which is close to skilled human riders. The fact that you have to pedal in order to make them go, and that they don’t exceed 20 mph assisted which is well within the range of even average riders. They won’t tear up trails, and may even distribute people across different types of trails because they help you overcome long steep climbs. In some places, even Class 1 electric mountain bikes are illegal or have been banned, but that’s rare and the latest technology is so quiet and well-integrated it can be difficult to even tell it’s there.
