This is a live video of my computer room in Wellington during the 7.8 earthquake from Kaikoura. In Wellington this was rated as a Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) 7 event. It was quite some earthquake, about 1 minute 20 seconds from first shaking till it stopped. The first words you hear are me saying "ohhh - big earthquake", I had no idea just how big it would get within the next minute. At first my son and I thought it would be the usual M5 shake, but as the shaking grew worse, it increasingly drew our attention. Diving under the desk is what we've been told is the best thing to do, it certainly protects from anything falling from the ceiling. The 2013 earthquake in Wellington was the only other time I've gone under a desk. My house is an Edwardian (1909) two storey wooden structure that I had earthquake strengthened about 25 years ago. The room is on the second floor. Apart from a couple of roof tiles shaken out of place by a few centimetres, there was no damage to the house.
