Should I do the 35% or 70% royalty rate on my eBook with Amazon KDP | Amazon Self-Pub Royalties

When self-publishing on Amazon KDP you have the option to pick a 35% royalty rate or a 70% royalty rate for your eBook. (Your print rate is always 60% after printing costs) For easy math let’s assume your eBook is $1.00 and you have the smallest most compact file size so your distribution fee is negligible. Okay so $1.00. If you have a 35% royalty rate you would get 35 cents, if you have a 70% royalty rate you get 70 cents. The royalty rate is what you as the author take from the cut. The example I just gave makes no sense to seasoned Amazon KDP authors because the price of your eBook dictates which royalty rates you can access. If your ebook is less than $2.99 or more than $9.99 your royalty rate has to be at the 35% rate. You cannot get a higher royalty rate. When your book is $2.99 up to $9.99 you can elect either the 35% royalty rate or the 70%. Obviously, pick the 70% rate. Take more money. There is no advantage to sticking with 35% at that point. Some authors may intentionally price a book below $2.99 to be competitive, or to push the first book in a series, or for a limited-time offer. You may have an eBook over $9.99 because you feel it is high quality. Up to you.
