HOW TO USE XMATCH SEARCH MODES IN EXCEL BY EXCEL IN A MINUTE Welcome to Excel in a Minute! Having enough control over your data makes your work faster, especially when you are dealing with a large database. A special feature among selected Excel functions is an additional way to control your data. In this lesson, you will learn about the search modes you can use in the X Match function. The X match function searches for a lookup value then returns an integer that indicates the position of the match found in the lookup array. This runs on four arguments where only the first two are required. In this video, we will focus on the fourth argument called search mode. The first two search mode options are technically the same but work on different directions regardless if your data is sorted or not. These mode options prompt Excel to return a value from the first match it finds. The search first-to-last option searches the lookup array from top to bottom or left to right; and the search last-to-first option searches for the lookup value from bottom to top or right to left of the lookup array. You can use these by inputting 1 and -1, respectively, as your sixth argument. For example, in this data, there are 4 listings for Milk Tea products. We want to know the position of one of these in the list of products. If you search from first to last, the position it will return is 3. But if you search from last to first, the position it will return is 9. The other two search mode options are also technically similar to each other but work in different directions. These are the binary search modes. These requires your data to be sorted in ascending or descending order, then returns the value from the first match it finds. If you use 2 as the fourth argument, it will require your data to be sorted in ascending order and searches the data from first to last. On the other hand, if you use -2, it will require your data to be sorted in descending order and searches the data from last to first. For example, there are four listed coffee products, and we want to get the position in the list of one of these. If we use the ascending sorted data with the fourth argument as 2, we will get position 1. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ 🤓 VIEW THE BLOG POST (in here you can download the presentation and the excel file) 👇 https://excelintuitive.com/how-to-use... to download the files go to the bottom of the BLOG POST and pres the download button ___________________________________________________________________ 🔔 SUBSCRIBE TO EXCEL IN A MINUTE ON YOUTUBE 👇 / @excelinaminute ___________________________________________________________________ 💥FOLLOW EXCEL IN A MINUTE ON SOCIAL MEDIA 👇 Instagram ► / excelintuitive Facebook ► / excelinaminute LinkedIn► / excel-in-a-minute ___________________________________________________________________ 🤔 ABOUT EXCEL IN A MINUTE 😃 ABOUT US Excel can be Challenging , but EXCEL IN A MINUTE has simplified it for you.
