Linda Bangs-Urban on baritone saxophone & Annemi Egri on piano are playing the Sonata No. 1 for Cello from Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741). Recorded April 2007 at Darmstadt, Germany. Movements: 1. Largo 0:08 2. Allegro 03:58 3. Largo maestoso 07:13 4. Allegro gaio 10:34 The Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi was born 1678 in Venice. At age 25 he entered the priesthood an had the task of teaching the violin in the Ospedale della Pietá, an orphanage for young girls. After a year and a half he left the priesthood and extended his teaching activities to include lessons on the cello, viola and viola d´amore as well as directing the girls orchestra at the orphanage. During this time many of his compositions were written for church services. During his life Vivaldi wrote nearly 500 concertos. Among them were 241 for the violin and 39 for the bassoon. He also wrote for unconventional instruments such as the viola d´amore, the mandolin and the salterio. In his days he was very experimental and open to new ideas. If one continues this line of thought, it follows that playing this cello Sonata No. 1 on the saxophone is not so unusual. In fact, the baritone saxophone is well suited to play his music, because it is a question of musical style. Linda Bangs-Urban studied saxophone under Laurence Wyman at the SUNY at Fredonia N.Y. as well as being a former student of Sigurd Rascher. Between the year of its founding in 1969 and December 1990 she was a member of the famous Rascher Saxophone Quartet, in which she played the baritone saxophone. She teached at music conservatories in Darmstadt and Mainz Germany. Ms. Bangs-Urban has musically participated in over 200 premiere performances and gained international recognition.
